Yeah, it's nice to have rules but the bottom line is, after credentials and insurance, etc, is whether the therapist is a human being with whom you might be able to form a trusting relationship. Good therapy is, ultimately, about connection and relationship with an intelligent and thoughtful other. Is this individual someone capable of deeply listening and reflecting with you as you share your most intimate thoughts. Do you feel safe? Do you feel heard? Do you feel respected?
I agree. But, most people do not have an idea of how to start the process. Subsequent articles will focus on how to monitor the therapeutic relationship. I indicated briefly in this article how to form an initial impression of the provider and the therapy setting.
